- Oscar Wilde
As Oscar Wilde said, art is really the most powerful way to express individualism around the world. The artist have all the opportunities to decide from the individuality which they will express to the way how they will express it.
The 2016-2017 academic year’s second exhibition to be held in CDS gallery shows the individuality of each student artist successfully. The works shown are very different to each other’s in the case of materials, technique, media, and nd subjects. The works displayed this Term in the gallery are all different in genre; there were drawings, calligraphy, sculpture… etc.
For some people, it is more difficult to carry out their own individual project than do what others assign them to them. Individual projects require far more depth in thinking solely by themselves about their project, the quality, its meaning, and how to make it. Therefore, producing individual work is a very hard thing to do, but it can also be some of the best work artists produce. Individual works bring far more attachment, because of the efforts and time they spent on it.
One series of artwork by Kyungmin Park (11) represents the theme of ‘Obangsaek’ (오방색) or the Korean traditional colour spectrum - the color scheme of the five Korean traditional colors of white, black, red, blue and yellow. Her series of artworks contains calligraphy and photographs. There are two calligraphy works she did - one with the word ‘우리나라’ (Our country) and the other with the names of Obangsaek in different languages on the different backgrounds which have the colors that match to the words. Her uses of different tones of colours and languages seems showing deeper meaning, such as the ‘harmony of different traditions’.
Along with her works, there is another series of works by Hyemin (Christine) Chun (11), in which her artworks are almost like the pages from the fairytale. Her artworks also contains the mixture of drawings and sculpture that are all focused on her own character - very cute blond girl wearing pink dress! - and the galaxy. One of her works is a sculpture she made, which features the girl sitting on the planet looking upwards. This artworks shows that her character and the background blend well with each other and also, in some ways, reminds the audience about one famous fairytale, ‘The Little Prince’.
Since the works in second exhibition are from the individual projects, there is much more diversity compared to previous exhibition. Their successful and talented art skills allow them to come up with great individual art pieces, and these showing their aptitude for Art.
