Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself, Jun.
A: That is a broad question, but, I guess, I am a senior that is going to go to college too, and I am also one of the two students that majoring in art as a senior.
Q: What got you interested in art?
A: I enjoyed doing art from a young age, and I also watched my sister doing art and enjoying it. I think what got me into art was boarding basically. I had nothing to do, and I was looking for things to do. Then I found art as a source of entertainment.
Q: So have you taken any private art classes?
A: Like out of school? Yes, I have taken tutoring from another artist.
Q: So what is your preferred medium?
A: My most preferred medium...? well I guess for choosing my usual pieces I enjoy using compressed charcoal and pencil, more so than paints. As for 3D sculpture pieces, I enjoyed wax and clay.
Q: And why was that?
A: Why I enjoyed using them? The reason why enjoyed pencil and compressed charcoals is because they have more control. I can literally do whatever I want with them, in contrast to paints which kind of, I have trouble with what kind of pattern follows, like water for example. And for 3d pieces I like clay and wax, because they are pieces where you can subtract and both add the amount of materials too, so you can carve away stick on the materials on to whatever you have. – Because I have more freedom with the pieces.
Q: Why do you want to make sculptures?
From a young age, I enjoyed makings things with my hands, starting with clay, rubber clay, and origami. When I grew up, I thought that it was not a bad idea to make that kind of hobby for my career in the future.
Q: What do you think the general theme of your artwork is?
A: I don’t really have a general genre or theme, this work was just mean to form a portfolio, so I had to be as diverse as possible.
Q: Which are your two favorite works amongst the collection? What are they about?
A: First one would be the sculptural piece called the “Metal Man,” and the second piece would be “The Butt.” I guess “The Butt” might sound and seem a bit childish, but I thought that it was unique as piece because it’s the only body parts expressed throughout my whole collection. Also, I thought that the backside of a person shows a lot about that person in contrast to faith and hands that you might expect to see from the person. For “Metal Man,” it was the piece that really was about placing the positions. I had two different factors of the art to work with. The wireman and soldered pieces of iron, and I had to put them together. I think it’s my favorite because I had the most fun arranging the two different components of the project.
Q: Many of your artworks tends to focus on the color blue. Is there any specific reason why you have chosen this color? Is there any meaning behind this?
A:There’s no specific reason as to why I chose the color blue, but I guess there will be a lot of times where I would decide to do a piece related work, and I would start with a certain color. There are a lot of colors on the palette, and when I look for the first color to start with, the color happens to be blue. Also, I personally like the color blue. I feel calm when I see this color and I hope that other people feel the same as I do.
Q: Who’s your favorite artist?
A: My favorite artist is Eugene Boudin and of course big famous ones like Van Gogh, Monnet, and for sculpture pieces- Michelangelo, and Alberto Gioacometti I think? I cannot remember. And I also like Phillip Gustin
Q: Do you have any other hobbies or exercise other than your art?
A: I guess I exercise every day- skipping rope, but I also enjoy dancing and drumming as a hobby.
